WHAT IS RHINOPLASTY? - FACE SURGERY
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure (more commonly known as a ‘nose job’) whereby the nose is aesthetically enhanced. It is also used to correct and reconstruct the nose or improve or restore function.
The procedure involves accessing the bone and cartilage that support the nose in order to reduce, augment or rearrange it to create a newly shaped form. The objective is to create facial harmony and in some cases, to improve breathing or correct a congenital defect.
IS THIS PROCEDURE SUITABLE FOR ME? - FACE SURGERY
Your suitability will be determined by consultation with a surgeon who will take into account factors such as your current condition and medical history. The consultation will enable you to come to an informed decision.
There are many reasons why you may consider rhinoplasty; some of them are as follows:
- Your nose is crooked
- Your nose appears too large/wide for your face
- Previous injury has misshapen your nose
- There is a prominent bump on the nasal bridge
- Irregularities with the nasal tip and/or nostrils
WILL IT LEAVE A SCAR? - FACE SURGERY
Any scarring following rhinoplasty is usually inconspicuous.
In most cases the incisions are made inside of the nose. In some circumstances it may be necessary to remove small wedges of skin at the base of the nostril however any scarring will be hidden in the natural crease of the skin between the cheek and the nose. The exact location of any scars will depend on the type and extent of the surgery you have and this can be discussed with the surgeon before you proceed.
HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST? - FACE SURGERY
The results of rhinoplasty are permanent, however over time the aging process may have an effect on the appearance of your nose.
HOW LONG WILL THE PROCEDURE TAKE? - FACE SURGERY
This will depend on the extent of the surgery; but usually the procedure itself takes between 1 and 3 hours.
WILL I EXPERIENCE ANY PAIN? WHAT KIND OF POST-OPERATIVE CARE CAN I EXPECT? - FACE SURGERY
During the procedure you will be under general or local anaesthesia. However, you may experience some pain and discomfort after the surgery as your body heals. You can expect to be sore, swollen and bruised and you should follow the surgeon’s instructions with regard to post op care. After the surgery you will be given painkillers to help with any pain and discomfort you may be feeling.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME? HOW LONG BEFORE I AM ACTIVE AGAIN? - FACE SURGERY
Most people return to their normal everyday activities within a few days, however there will be some swelling and bruising which will mainly be resolved within 3 to 4 weeks. You will have a splint on your nose during the first week and it may be a few weeks before you can wear glasses without additional support if the bones of your nose were altered.
You should not attempt any strenuous exercise or participate in any vigorous activity for the first few weeks post-surgery.
Recovery periods can vary between patients and are dependent upon factors such as age, state of health, the procedure undertaken and your own bodies healing ability.
CAN RHINOPLASTY BE COMBINED WITH OTHER PROCEDURES? - FACE SURGERY
Yes. Rhinoplasty may be performed by itself or in conjunction with other procedures such as face lifts.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED? - FACE SURGERY
In common with all types of surgery, there are certain risks involved. The majority of side effects often prove to be temporary but can include bleeding, oedema, infections, or an adverse reaction to anaesthesia.
Full information of the risks involved, and what you can expect to experience, will be provided to you by your surgeon before the procedure.
