WHAT IS OTOPLASTY? - FACE SURGERY

Otoplasty refers to the shaping of the outer ear (known as the ‘pinna’). It can be performed as either reconstructive or cosmetic surgery and helps to reshape and improve appearance of the ears.
Otoplasty is a relatively common procedure which is sometimes referred to as ‘ear pinning’.
This is because one of the techniques used that fall under the term ‘otoplasty’, pins back protruding ears. Otoplasty can also be performed to reduce or increase the size of ears and to correct stretched earlobes. It can also correct other issues such as ‘cauliflower ears’; common to boxers and rugby players.

IS THIS PROCEDURE SUITABLE FOR ME? - FACE SURGERY

If you are self-conscious about the prominence of your ears or want to enhance the appearance then otoplasty may be suitable for you.
There are generally three main methods of otoplasty which include ear augmentation, pinning back the ear, or ear reduction.
Your suitability for the procedure will be determined by a surgeon’s consultation which will take into account factors such as your medical history and condition.
The consultation with the surgeon will enable you to come to an informed decision.
You should be aware that, similar to natural ears, the position of the ears post-surgery may not match perfectly.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE? - FACE SURGERY

Depending on the desired results the otoplasty methods used can vary.
Generally, an incision is made behind the ear to expose the underlying cartilage. Any excess cartilage is removed or in some cases remodelled. The incisions are then closed with stitches.

WILL IT LEAVE A SCAR? - FACE SURGERY

The incisions are made behind the ear. However, because of the location, any scars are usually hidden. A consultation with your surgeon will determine the exact location of the incision.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST? - FACE SURGERY

The results of this type of procedure are usually permanent.

HOW LONG WILL THE PROCEDURE TAKE? - FACE SURGERY

The procedure takes between one to three hours depending on the complexity. You may be subject to either local of general anaesthesia.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME? HOW LONG BEFORE I AM ACTIVE AGAIN? - FACE SURGERY

The initial recovery time can vary and can take anything from one to two weeks.
You are recommended to avoid any activities which could cause trauma to the ears during the recovery period. Physical contact sports should be avoided for several weeks.
Recovery periods can vary between patients and are dependent upon factors such as age, state of health, the procedure undertaken and your own bodies healing ability.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED? - FACE SURGERY

Otoplasty is a relatively low risk procedure. However, full information of the risks involved, and what you can expect to experience, will be provided to you by your surgeon before the procedure.
