WHAT ARE CHIN IMPLANTS? - FACE SURGERY

Chin implants or ’chin augmentation’ is a procedure performed to enhance or reshape the size of the chin.
Chin implants can enhance a recessed or underdeveloped chin and provide greater definition, thereby restoring facial balance.
The objective of this surgery is to create harmony with the face as a whole.

IS THIS PROCEDURE SUITABLE FOR ME? - FACE SURGERY

If you are looking for a more defined jawline or have a weak or receding chin then you may want to consider chin augmentation. A receding chin can disrupt the balance of the facial profile, and in some cases an underdeveloped chin can create an appearance of plumpness because it ‘crowds’ the underlying neck structures.
Your suitability for the procedure will be determined by a surgeon’s consultation which will take into account factors such as your medical history and condition.
The consultation with the surgeon will enable you to come to an informed decision.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE? - FACE SURGERY

The incision to insert the implant can be made either through the inside of the mouth or externally from under the chin.
A pocket is created in which the implant is inserted. Once inserted, the implant is securely sewn into place and the incision is sutured.

WILL IT LEAVE A SCAR? - FACE SURGERY

If the incision is made through the mouth no visible scarring will be present.
For incisions made under the chin, these will be carefully made in the crease of the skin so that any scarring will be barely noticeable.
A consultation with your surgeon will determine the exact location of the incision.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST? - FACE SURGERY

The results of this type of surgery are considered permanent.

HOW LONG WILL THE PROCEDURE TAKE? - FACE SURGERY

The procedure takes approximately one hour and can be performed under local or general anaesthetic.

WILL I EXPERIENCE ANY PAIN? - FACE SURGERY

During the procedure you will be under either local or general anaesthesia.
However, you may experience some pain and discomfort after the surgery as your body heals. You can expect to be sore, and swollen for a few days. After the surgery you will be given painkillers to help with any pain and discomfort you may be feeling.
You should follow the surgeon’s instructions with regard to post op care.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME? HOW LONG BEFORE I AM ACTIVE AGAIN? - FACE SURGERY

The recovery period for chin augmentation is relatively short when compared to other facial procedures; usually only a few days to a week. Most patients are back to work within a week; nevertheless strenuous activity should be avoided for two weeks following chin augmentation.
Recovery periods can vary between patients and are dependent upon factors such as age, state of health, the procedure undertaken and your own bodies healing ability.
