10 MYTHS ABOUT LIPOSUCTION

When it comes to the subject of cosmetic surgery, despite it being a highly regulated industry, having exemplary health and safety standards, employing some of the most skilled and talented surgeons (and technicians) in the world, and utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and technology, urban myths and misunderstanding still abound.

This is especially the case when it comes to liposuction.

It's difficult to say why this is exactly, but it may be because the majority of people do not fully understand a) how it works b) the different types you can have, and c) what it can be used to do.

So, to help put things right once and for all we have come up with this myth busting article to dispel these misunderstandings and shine some much needed light on the subject.

WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?

Liposuction is a special form of surgery that removes unwanted body fats that have accumulated under the skin in order to contour a more perfectly shaped body.

Areas that are most commonly addressed are usually the inner and outer thighs, abdomen, waist, hips and upper arms. However liposuction can also can be performed in other areas such as the knees, ankles, double chin and even on the face.

There are two main types of liposuction. Both are extremely effective but employed to target different objectives, although they can and often are used in conjunction with each other.

The first main type of liposuction is referred to as the 'suction' liposuction technique, meaning that fat cells are broken up under the skin with a cannula and then suctioned out of the body. The second main type of liposuction is referred to as ‘laser’ lipolysis or ‘smart’ liposuction, meaning that a laser is used to melt down fat quickly into its liquid form which is then drained out of the body through the lymphatic system.

Which procedure is used depends upon which areas are being treated. Generally speaking, for more fatty tissue areas like the tummy, the suction-liposuction may be preferred as larger amounts can be suctioned away from here, while for areas where only a mild degree of contouring is needed – such as the knees or face - smart liposuction may be the preferred method of choice.

Okay, so now we have that straight its time to tackle those myths!

MYTH 1. IT'S A GREAT WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT

Wrong! Liposuction is actually more about contouring the body and targeting specific ‘problem’ areas and making them look much better.

MYTH 2. IT'S A CURE FOR CELLULITE

Once again. Nope! Liposuction removes troublesome fat cells that are actually below the tissues that cause cellulite. Of course there are other treatments that we can offer that will help with removing the signs of cellulite, but liposuction isn’t one of them.

MYTH 3. IT'S NOT ACTUALLY A SURGICAL PROCEDURE

Liposuction certainly is a surgical procedure, although of course its a relatively minimally invasive one that’s very safe. Nevertheless it is always carried out by a highly trained and qualified surgeon in a state-of-the-art medical facility.

MYTH 4. IT'S ONLY FOR WOMAN

Absolutely not! Its 100% non gender specific. Regardless of whether you are male, female, non-binary or pan gender. Basically if you have stubborn fat that cannot be shifted through diet or exercise it can almost certainly help.

MYTH 5. ITS BENEFITS DON’T LAST VERY LONG

Fortunately another completely unsubstantiated myth! The benefits are typically almost always permanent. Post procedure all you need to do is maintain a good diet and keep fit and the area successfully treated will stay looking the same i.e. a whole lot better than before.

MYTH 6. THE FAT JUST COMES STRAIGHT BACK SOMEWHERE ELSE

Removed fat doesn’t magically and mysteriously re-appear in another part of the body. Liposuction simply removes some of the fat in a specific area. But if after surgery you gain lots of fat through poor diet and lifestyle choices then of course your body will fill out to reflect that.

MYTH 7. TUMMY TUCKS AND LIPOSUCTION ARE THE SAME THING

Actually they are totally different things but the really good news here is that they can be done together for amazingly successful results. Liposuction removes fat while a tummy tuck deals principally with making the abdomen thinner and firmer, as well as removing stretch marks and excess skin – so it's an especially good combination for women who want their pre pregnancy figures back.

MYTH 8. ONLY RICH PEOPLE CAN AFFORD IT

Fortunately, the days since cosmetic or plastic surgery were the preserves of the rich and famous are long behind us. In fact recent statistics produced by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that this area of medical surgery is now most popular with people from middle income brackets. This is probably in part due to the fact that most treatments, including liposuction, are very affordable - especially if you get your procedure performed via Medi Tours Hungary in Budapest where you can benefit from not just state-of-the-art facilities but also world class surgeons.

MYTH 9. IT'S NOT SUITABLE FOR OLDER PATIENTS

There is no strict upper age limit as to when you are no longer able to benefit from liposuction. Basically as long as you are in reasonable health and not suffering form any serious condition that precludes surgery then you are eligible. In fact liposuction within the post 65 age group is extremely popular especially around the jaw and chin area. So, remember that regardless of how old you are liposuction could be exactly what you need even if you are 45 or 85!

MYTH 10. IT'S ONLY FOR BIGGER PARTS OF THE BODY LIKE THE TUMMY

The stomach area is certainly very popular, but liposuction can also be wonderful at treating lots of other body areas. Places such as the inner and outer thighs, entire upper and lower abdomen, the flanks, around the buttocks, the hips, the upper arms, the chin and jowl area and the neck can all potentially benefit from liposuction as can the knees, ankles and even the face. A consultation with your cosmetic surgeon will review which areas can be best treated, as each case is evaluated individually for optimum results.
