WHAT IS LASIK EYE VISION CORRECTION SURGERY? - MEDICAL

LASIK eye correction laser treatment is the gold standard in laser eye vision correction treatment.
It is quick, pain free, and has almost zero downtime.

LASIK is an acronym for 'laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis' and works by re-shaping the cornea which in turn leads to clearer vision. It is an extremely popular procedure with an exceptionally high success rate.

IS THIS PROCEDURE SUITABLE FOR ME? - MEDICAL

At the start of the process you will be thoroughly assessed to see if this treatment is suitable for your particular circumstances.

The assessment process has been designed to ensure you achieve the best results and your expectations are managed in the correct manner.

In the event that you not suitable it is very possible that you will be suitable for another similar alternative procedure known as PRK.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? - MEDICAL

LASIK can noticeably improve your vision. It can help with short-sightedness, long-sightedness, and astigmatism.

It is pain free with negligible downtime.

Improving your vision can have a dramatic effect on the quality of your life. You will be able to easily participate in activities which were previously challenging, and your overall quality of life will be significantly improved.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST? - MEDICAL

The results of LASIK eye correction surgery are permanent. However some people will still need to wear glasses after surgery (although the prescription will be at a reduced level) whereas some people will achieve 20/20 vision.

HOW LONG WILL THE PROCEDURE TAKE? - MEDICAL

The procedure takes approximately 5 to 15 minutes for both eyes.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE PROCEDURE? - MEDICAL

You may be given a mild oral sedative prior to surgery and receive a small number of anaesthetic eye drops.

The surgeon will create a thin flap in the cornea using a femtosecond laser which will then be folded back so the surgeon can access the underlying cornea. The cornea will then be re-shaped to more accurately focus light on the retina and improve vision. The cornea will then be put back to normal and left to heal naturally.

WILL I EXPERIENCE ANY PAIN? - MEDICAL

No, but you may experience some slight pressure and discomfort during the procedure.

WHAT KIND OF POST-OPERATIVE CARE CAN I EXPECT? - MEDICAL

You will be prescribed eye drops which are usually necessary for about a month. The day after surgery you will be seen again by the doctor. A further check-up is recommended within six months. It is advisable to wear sunglasses with UV protection for two or three months, when out in the sun.

As with any surgery, you should always follow all post-treatment instructions from your doctor and take any medication prescribed. Also, you should avoid rubbing your eyes until they are fully healed

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME? HOW LONG BEFORE I AM ACTIVE AGAIN? - MEDICAL

You can expect some blurry vision immediately following surgery but in a few short days your vision will improve.

Recovery time varies from patient to patient but you should be able to return to normal activity immediately or within a day or two. It is recommended that you refrain from strenuous activity for up to 7 days to avoid any trauma and give your eyes time to heal.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS INVOLVED? - MEDICAL

Naturally, just like any type of surgery, there are potential risks involved.

Full information about them and what you can expect to experience will be clearly provided to you by your surgeon at the consultation stage.
