WHAT IS A SINUS LIFTING? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Sinus lifting, sometimes known as ’sinus augmentation’, is a surgical procedure which adds bone to the upper jaw. To make room for the bone, the maxillary sinus is elevated or ’lifted’.
WHY IS THIS PROCEDURE PERFORMED? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
This procedure is performed when there is not enough bone in the jaw for dental implants.
This may be because the sinuses are too close to the jaw. Alternatively, bone may have been lost due to periodontal disease or tooth loss.
WILL I EXPERIENCE ANY PAIN DURING OR AFTER TREATMENT? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
A local anaesthetic is normally used and the procedure usually takes a couple of hours.
For the first few days after treatment, you may experience some pain or discomfort, but this will soon subside.
Your dentist may prescribe medicine but generally most pain or discomfort disappears after a few days.
HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN RETURN TO NORMAL ACTIVITIES? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Most patients are advised to take it easy for the first 24 hours while the anaesthetic is wearing off. You should be able to return to routine activities the next day.
