WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is a dental procedure to treat infection at the centre of a tooth (the root canal system).
The soft tissue (pulp) inside the root canal can become inflamed or infected for a number of reasons including decay or injury.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING PROCEDURE? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Your dentist will open your tooth through the crown, the infected pulp will be removed and any abscesses drained.
Once this is done your dentist will clean and enlarge the root canal ready for the final step of the procedure such as application of a crown or a filling.
WILL I EXPERIENCE ANY PAIN DURING OR AFTER TREATMENT? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
A local anaesthetic is normally used so it should feel no different to having an ordinary filling done.
For the first few days after treatment, your tooth may feel sensitive, but any discomfort will soon pass. Your dentist may prescribe medicine but generally most pain or discomfort disappears after a few days.
HOW LONG BEFORE I CAN RETURN TO NORMAL ACTIVITIES? - COSMETIC DENTISTRY
Most patients are advised to take it easy for the first 24 hours while the anaesthetic is wearing off. You should be able to return to routine activities the next day.
