Worried About Cancer?
There can’t be many of us who aren’t. It’s a disease that has touched most of us, if not personally, then through family and friends. The fact is that, even with the billions of pounds and dollars dedicated to eradicating this terrible disease, more than 1 in 3 of us will develop cancer at some stage in our lives.
There are over 200 different types of cancer that can occur anywhere in the body. They all have different causes, different symptoms, and require different types of treatment.
Early Diagnosis – what difference does it make?
Actually, early diagnosis is the key to the successful management and cure of cancer. How often have you heard of someone who would have lived had their disease been spotted earlier? Sometimes there can be no symptoms until the cancer has really taken a hold and spread to inoperable parts of the body; sometimes waiting for NHS treatment is a death sentence – especially if you are in the wrong postcode.
However, when cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages, as malignant cells are just beginning to divide, it can more often be successfully treated and completely cured.
How Can I Tell If I Have Cancer?
There’s a technique, called PET/CT scanning, which provides diagnostic accuracy of up to 100% in certain types of cancer because tumour cells can be detected already at only a few millimetres in size.
What is PET/CT Scanning?
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) combined with computerized tomography (CT) is the latest, most powerful 3D, high resolution imaging technology. It holds great promise in the diagnosis of many diseases, particularly cancer. A non-invasive test, the PET scan accurately images the cellular function of the human body while the CT provides information about the body's anatomy such as size, shape and location of tumours.
How is the PET/CT Performed?
PET/CT imaging is usually an outpatient procedure. Radio tracer is injected and then travels throughout the body, which takes about 60 minutes, after which the imaging will begin. The whole procedure takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. There is no pain or discomfort during the examination and you can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.
Combining these two scanning technologies, a PET/CT scan enables physicians to more accurately diagnose early stage cancer, determine its extent and spread, prescribe the most suitable treatment, and track progress and effectiveness of cancer therapy.
Who can have a PET/CT scan?
Anyone. If you are health conscious and have cancer in the family, if you already have the disease and want to know if you are in remission, or if you just want to make sure that you’re not the 1 in 3 who will, at some point, succumb to cancer, then this full body screening examination is right for you.
